7th Carminian Navy Empty
PostSubject: 7th Carminian Navy   7th Carminian Navy I_icon_minitimeSat Sep 18, 2010 8:39 pm

I'm going into DS Smile
I asked myself a question who I'd like to play. The answer was: Sailors! I've dreamed to make Navy forces of IG, but such amount of miniatures were out of my wallet.....with DS could make his in smaller scale Smile

I've written some fluff. Now it's description of their homeworld. I haven't got clear vision of this squad yet, so not many concretes..

Carmina is ocean planet with millions of islands of various sizes, from peaks of undersea mountains, barely protruding to the surface to massive isles with area of many thousands square kilometres. Main treasure is hidden under ocean depth: huge petroleum deposits. Extracted with enormous oil rigs, refined in land based industrial complexes and sent to countless recipients scattered across Empire of Mankind, provide a wealth to the planet, but necessitate the use of appropriate protection to the planet against the enemies. Topography does not allow for the creation of a stable front, and separated islands could be easily isolated and conquered. Main inland complexes are well secured with proper PDF forces garrisoned around, but lonely oil rigs and secondary isles are easy prey. Other problem was weather. Frequent storms and perpetual rain in some regions prevent use of air forces. These factors have necessitated the creation of sill able to quickly move large quantities of troops in each region of the planet: Carminian Ocean Navy was born. It took five decades of strain from Adeptus Mechanicus, Imperial Guard, Administratorium, and common citizens to accomplish this project. Each of 11 main islands has battle port with training base, and Ricca, the biggest city on the planet, has shipyard facilities. There are almost 400 auxiliary ports capable of refuelling, resupplying and minor repairs.

Ships are divided into 2 categories. depends of its pose: carriers and battleships. Carriers are capable of transporting solid portion of soldiers to conflict area. Each vessel can accommodate entire battalion, up to 500 armed sailors plus necessary crew. They are mobile bases with training facilities, barracks, officers apartments etc. Sailors spend there few years, patrolling seas, rarely touching a land. Grand Carriers, with length reaching a mile, are used to transport land forces from one warfare theatre to another. They allow to move entire regiments between islands, is it infantry or tank regiment, and provide support to landing troops with proper smaller vessels and air transport. Used only during planetary conflicts, which surprisingly take quite often.
Battleships are size between Carriers and Grand Carriers. Their main purpose is provide heavy artillery support to landing forces. Armed with 225 and 340mm cannon and 400mm mortars batteries, rocket launchers and Vendetta assault airships, could shatter any resistance.

Sailors is usual term defining troops located on carriers. Despite training and lack of numerous heavy support they proved to be universal infantry. During mighty Waaagh! of Warlord Khunuk, beaches were assaulted and then conflict lasted as a half-year long trench war. Against Dark Eldar pirates they excel in rapid attacks with massive barrage support.
Individual battalions have their own specialisations, traditions and preferred methods of fighting like 89th and massed bayonet assault, or 143rd and their rank formation with volleys of lasfire. Battalions have to be flexible to defend planet from many different threats.

Standard Battalion is divided into 6 platoons; two standard infantry, two mechanised, one airborne and one recon. The support consist of Sentinels, Hellhounds and one Lerman Russes squadron. Battalions are independent units, but during longer campaigns are often linked together into regiment-like format, allowing chance f.e. to form a tank company.

I will be glad for any comment Smile

Very cool, original fluff. The whole concept works very well for me. It seems like a death squad from this army would fit into the WW2 Commando style, favouring surgical strikes at key enemy waterfront bases. Urban Fighters (with their boobytraps) or Catachans (with their sneaking about) might fit as a base unit for them.

Make sure you show us how they turn out. Welcome to Death Squads

Or Mordians with their close formations and volleys of fire. Or Ice Guard able to combat landing through cliffs and make ambush at the unprotected rear Smile

Thanks for comment!

What I dislike is this extreme "world specialization". I know, Catachan is one big dangerous jungle, Valhalla is one big dangerous snow, Cadia is one big dangerous fortress. But there should be millions of normal worlds, terra-morfed, with water, with many climate regions, with changing seasons, with mountains, oceans, plain fields, lakes, deserts, swamps and icebergs. On my world, like on Earth, is a place for every formation. And when you cant say what is really specialisation of Carminian soldiers....hey, you can! Its their uniwesallity, but only looking at the whole nation. Every battalion could have their own favourable tactic, which is due their stationing place, last meet enemies on long campaign, lack of viable weapon, or original commmanders idea etc. Yes, it cannot give such results as living in Catachan or Valhalla, but everyone could learn how to fight in jungle or arctic climate.
In my opinion its a brain and figuring skill that allow human kind to survive in galaxy. They can use new strategy, weapon or maneouver against foe and win.

Ufff....
Creating idea for my 7th batallion I thought about assault unit, not dedicated HtH fighters, but men who comes suddenly, disembark from Chimeras/Valkiries/landing ships, shoot everything, secure "bridgeheads" and eventually makes massive bayonete assault.

I especially like some Mordian and DKoK rules for them. Stay in formation boys! is great for fast moving, and Don't fear the Reaper shows discipline and faith in officers. Entrenchtment is out of place here. Firing lanes are much more better.

I take your point.

The non-specialists/generalists in Death Squads are currently cadians (they lack any drive towards a particular style of play). I agree that you shouldn't pigeon hole, but on the other hand all these 'worlds' really represent is modern(ish) combat archetypes e.g. WW1 trench warfare = DKOK, 19th century disciplined formations (possibly even napoleonic) = Mordian, Catachan = recent jungle conflicts (everything from Vietnam to Korea to the Pacific in WW2). I prefer to think of each squad in this way and create my own world with the rulesets available.

My last IG squad was Jenkala Urban Fighters - form which I created my hiveworld Varangians. My latest squad is 'catachan' purely for the ruleset - they are deathworlders with a spec ops leaning (still Varangian though). I personally feel we could do with a Tallarn squad, not because I want to play tallarn, but because that style of combat is not yet supported (you can play how you like with any squad but it won't always work).

You have a solid point with your ideas and it makes me think of the old doctrines in the previous IG codex (I know the new 'CADIAN/CATACHAN codex is powerful - but we lost any chance of creativity). Maybe there is something that can be done along those lines (Skills: Leader Doctrines??? - thinking out loud)

The bridgehead concept sounds ace, It's after all your game and you should develop your own history/story. If you have any insights in the game then please share. It is YOUR game.

@ Kadzik: AMAZING! Simply amazing! I never get tired of the GREAT diversity of stuff you guys can come up with. All the good stuff GW is missing... an 'island' world... that is SO COOL! Very original, fluffy (my favorite) and... practical! I mean, you just put THOUSANDS of possible story-lines in just one planet. BRAVO!

I was particularly drawn to the fact that the planet had an Ork infestation at one point, which comes back in strength from time to time. You know, once Orks invade a planet the only way to remove them all is by Exterminatus... stupid spores! Hehehe! The cool thing is that you have plenty of room for any of your friends who want to play Orks to create their own stories and they be 100% comfortable. The same goes for Dark Eldars... too bad we won't see the DE until some time after the new Codex comes out, so we can capture the new direction that GW will take for the race (probably the SMB will be reduced to nothing... a shame, really.)

I agree with you that the 'single' world concept is kindda lame... but from a marketing perspective, I understand GW's point. It is easier to create a single Death World for the Catachans and say they are 'one of the best example of Jungle Fighters' than trying to explain these specialists while describing the rest of the worlds they share with others. The problem I see with GW is (IMHO... I could be 100% mistaken) that they have lost that aspect of 40k that promoted individual creativity. For example, by phasing out of existence the 'vehicle creation rules' in which players had some guides on how to make stats for their own vehicles (as well as ideas on how to scratch-build their own), in preference of promoting buying ready made kits, many new players never experience such wonder. What got me DREAMING about 40k... and it took me 20 YEARS to find out about what 40k was really about... was a game of 40k I saw in Puerto Rico, in which the players had to take a 'computer core' out of a crashed ship, which happened to be a roll-on deodorant vial! I would make a yearly contest, in which players and hobbyists could submit their rules and vehicles (scratch built and kit-bashed)... the best would win the HONOR of having their creation mass produced as a new GW vehicle. You imagine how many people would LEARN how to play 40k, buy the basic models and vehicles to kit-bash? Right now there is a sense of 'us' vs 'them'... players and hobbyists vs GW. We all see GW as this monster corporation, aim to please share-holders rather than promote the hobby.

Think about yourself... you just put in 'paper' your dream part of the 40k universe. You will start with couple Squads... and as they become legends, you will appreciate them even more. It would become your goal to one day have your own Carminian army, because it would be so very cool. Right now... out of budget. With Death Squads you can start building your dream 20 guys at a time. The outlet to be creative is what makes players stick with 40k... so, I salute you. Salute It is people with your creativity that makes players like us STICK with 40k, regardless what happens in the corporate world. Anyway... GREAT setup. Congratulations! Truly inspiring.

Now... remember, you could do ANYTHING with ANY Squad of the Carminian Navy... after all, each Squad you create they could be specialists as part of the whole Navy. For the 7th Battalion, I think an Assault Specialists would be a fit. They could specialize on infiltration and assault. For game purposes, I would use the Catachan Jungle Fighters. Just rename some of the items (i.e. the Catachan Fang to a Vibro-Blade) and you are in business! Again... more room for your imagination to flourish. As long as you keep posting, we all be happy! HA!

On a more personal note... don't forget to stop by the Welcome Mat and introduce yourself, maybe stop by the Opponent Finder and put a pin on the map. We would like to get to know a little more about you and your armies, etc, etc, etc. Once you start building models... pictures! I WE love pictures... and of course, let us know what happens to the great Carminian Navy!

Ouch, thank you guys! Smile It's fantastic to see such warm replies!

Da Bank: Thanks, but on Carmina is Ocean Navy Smile

I like the new codex, especially for commanders orders and great flexibility of creating forces, cause I love 'combined forces" armies.

I don't like Catachan rules for this squad. They don't have any skill "officer-to-recruit", and I would like to keep theme of great bosun leading his men. My greatest inspiration is Crimean War, where Sevastopol was defended with distinctiful numbers of sailors of Black Sea Fleet. Sergeants and officers was essential, kept morale staing with soldiers in fortifications under artillery fire and leading the raiding parties, but they (officers) weren't better in fighting than normal sailors. They was just leading Smile So Mordian rules are much more better: tactical moves through ruins/beaches/trenches ti better positions and then volley fire and great courage inspired by officers bounce

Basic idea of simple world and doctrines of war than figure from this is quite effective and easy to keep....but when you think about this.....Soldier cannot be so much better in f.e. winter warfare than Finn during WWII, but there will be ridiculous situation:
-Captain, morale drops down, sir.
-What is the reason?
-Something chaotic coveres ground. It moves, and releases spores, sir.
-Inquisitor Montheimer has told me that this is called "grass" and is not dangerous. Encourage our men, lieutenant"

I have few questions:
1. Is mere sergeant officer? In list of Edward I saw Mordian Sweggers on captain and lieutenants, but not on sergeants.
2. Why we have no mortar Smile I was sure I could field mortar, and with help of grenade launcher, make some serious barrage fire.

I don't have started my squad yet, I don't even buy miniatures Smile I'm very excited imaginating conversions. Basicaly it will be mix of Cadians and Catachans.
Cadians: For sure I will remove shoulders straps and change some heads guys militia guys with carved caps. Changing lasguns into autoguns would be also fun Smile They will be the "shooters" and officer cadre.
Catachans: I love their sleeveless shirts! Some horizontal strips and navy white hats....yumy! Very Happy They will be the more assault oriented guys. Autoguns in the beginning of course but some decent hand weapon in future....

Well, Kadzik... if you are looking to have an Officer-Recruit relationship (I'm sure the The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer has a Chapter about that...) then Mordians are your Regional Platoon of choice! The combinations you can produce by having Officers and the Mordian Field Coordinator (their exclusive Hire Gun) are VERY nice.

Inquisitor Montheimer? Hmmm... sounds vaguely familiar. LOL To answer your questions.

1) Captain, Lieutenants AND Sergeants are Officers.
Quote :
All Officers in the Mordian Iron Guard are indoctrinated to carry and use a Mordian Iron Guard Swagger.
This means that they ALL get one during initial recruitment. You found an error on Edward's list. Kiwi will hate you! Hehehe... they are sparring partners back in New Zeland. Very Happy

2) Why no Mortar for anyone but Imperial Renegades? To tell you the truth, back when Dozer designed the weapon there was only one Regional Platoon (it was only Cadians) and we wanted to give the IR a little edge. Now that we have matured more as game designers and we have learned new balancing tweaks, we could do something to add the weapon to the IG. Although we can NOT venture on this balancing act for TLRB v0.6.0, I would much appreciate if you bring it up after we release it. I normally start a list with suggestions/fixes and then we could tackle the issue with fresh (new) eyes.

Regarding the conversion possibilities... the sky is the limit! I would suggest investing both on the Cadian and the Catachan Officer sprues. This are GREAT for bits you can add to your Squad; lots of heads and different weapons... VERY useful. Also, look for eBay... you can find the bits separate.

I would avoid single colors... somehow they don't feel right,
even on dark colors.

In bright or white colors, sailors look even stranger.

Sounds great, I had a similar thought after watching the Pacific. Looking foward to see what you'll do for models, any plans for landing craft?

@ Mordheimer Are those first four American recruitment posters by any chance? I would actually like to finish a campaign before we try to get any one new so we actually know the rules to teach them but it would definitely be great to get someone new. I tried to get some one interested by giving him a couple of minis but I'm not sure...
