 Double kick in kroot's ass

damn, i was so happy playing DS today, after so long break... even it was my kroots which were almost annihilated...
First I tried to bite some Fox's fairies- in my abscece they both played few games and those delicate, tasty seasoned meat was potted...
just too hard for me.

Scenario #1 Valkyria Down
Kroots are defenders.



fortunatelly my second group have fallen far away from designated point (21'), but it throws them near first squad.


fairies approaching... and shoting out a havy weapon and stalker in first turn..



attack continues...




i've remained with shaman, headhunter, shaper and one carnivore... bad... Kroot know when to hide in the treees... yup, wolountary rout.
i can't remember now that i take out even one of eldars...

Scenario #2
Stake out.

First met with tendi's orcs... tough guys...
That was a long battle, my guys parried and dodge a lot of hits, little bit more were parried by orcs... by their chests and heads...
Toughness 5 warboss was pain in the ass, he take out 4 of 5 of my casualities...


they're in my sigth... for a moment...



there were so many models inside one building that we decided to put some on the roof, just for clarification...

carnivore died, lara take out some officer and minion, heavy wpn specialist fell deep into... CC fight... fortunatelly shaman put the rough terrain template with center in 3eyes dice. far on rigth side my shaper are figthing with some minion... fo 3 or 4 turns... so many one's... Little Frustrated

the nob shot out (!) headhunter (lara), warboss toss my HWO apart and my leader are standing in the open among enemies...
And noone even scrath the warboss... the only one scored wound were dealed by S2 stalker... and succesfully saved. Damn orcs. Kroot routed.

Smack that's the punishment for not playing so long...

You guys playing in the snow! Nice pics. How did Lara Krooft did? She is my FAVORITE Kroot... EVER! How did you liked the Scenario... anything wrong with it? Any issues with the Kroot you are play-testing?

2nd game vs Orks? They are tough... against them you need to isolate them and initiate the attack. Your vicious charge (specially on the Hunter) will mow 'em. A T5 Nob? COOL! Those are particularly nasty... trick is to shoot him from distance. You need to build yourself some snipers. BTW... which UEP are your Kroots?

well, lara took 80% of overall frags Very Happy
scenario with valkyria... as i remember it never ends anything else then routing... maby quicker ending could do.
actually we tried to cut vicious charge to only +1 WS (before that we feel them overpowered, now, especially against orcs... i miss that Very Happy)
You write "shoot the nob" ok. but as i remember this is orcs who have S4 pistols. Poor kroots must deal with S3 AP- weapons... thats liitle bit too... lets say inadequate.

UEP? after playin with kauyon, now i trying with Anghkor Prok... working really nice.

But i have sobe objections against secon scenario; way too easy for defender.
If defender pu all his forces in the very middle, around leader, his opponent MUST split his forces, and then breaking of is particulary easy. tendi strech the battle i think double-time just to kill some 'funny greens'...

Well my friend, I suggest NOT messing with Vicious Charge... hehhe... puns aside, is made to balance the nasties. The Kroot are all about evolution, which takes time. The Vicious Charge (+1 WS and +1 S) applies ONLY when the Kroot initiates the attack (Charge).Rather than make Carnivores (for example) WS4 and S4, it seems more fitting to make them that ONLY when they initiate the assault... and for a brief moment. The Squad has been designed with that in mind. Vicious Charge can be easily negated by staying behind Cover (which gives +1 WS) and being aggressor. Certain enemies can even shrug off Vicious Charge under the right conditions. In our tests, Vicious Charge works... not too brutal, not too difficult. Play it as it is written, and your Kroot will PLAY like Kroot... aggressive, always moving for the Close Combat kill.

The Kroot lack 'advance' weaponry, so they have to 'evolve' what they have. Have you tweak your Rifles with Ceremonial Upgrades? You could make a 'poor mans' sniper rifle... and add the umph you need. Without the Ceremonial Upgrades, you are playing crippled Kroot. Wink The design is complete by using Vicious Charge as written (because that is how they are balanced) and the complete Depot.

The Anghkor Prok Unique Evolutionary Path (UEP) will tend to make your Kroot vicious in Close Combat. Again, do not let the +1 WS and +1 S scare your opponents... it IS balanced, because it is ONLY on the 1st Turn of Close Combat when the Kroot charges. Once your opponent learns this, they HAVE to modify their approach... Orks will become even MORE aggressive (funny to see!) to try and beat the Kroot to the punch and negate the bonus and most IG will become more shooty, to try and take the Kroot down before they get close. Use PLENTY of Hounds to form a 'wall' of targets (meat shields!) and let them take the shots and initial enemy assault.

The trick of Death Squads is that each Squad will play differently... IG Catachans play VERY different than IG Mordians, Orks or Eldar... and so would the Kroot. Depending on the UEP, the Squad will have certain tendencies that would move the Squad from its basic tactics (of aggressive predator) towards something else.

On the Stake-Out Scenario... you mentioned is too easy for the Defender. Hmmm.. that was my experience too. Any recommendations? I will bring your concerns to the Staff.

The deployment in the Vakyrie Down scenario is unclear to me. I see dr!zzt deploying a group around his vehicle and then a group that scatters. We interpreted deployment as deploying one group near the vehicle and then scattering each model left in its own direction. Might need to clear the text on that one (and maybe you are, already!).

were castrate vicious charge due to our earlier games, when ligthly armored eldars was ripping apart (blade fans), and untill now it worked... and for now my ceremonial upgrades are just mentioned in my kroot depot, so i didn't tried it out already...
for staked out- maby when defender have a determined place to evacuate (eg orc truck Very Happy) or whole edge...

Well... look at you! Defending the Eldar! I'm disappointing at you, young man. You do not deserve to have those cool Kroot models... yea... send them to me. I will give them back when you earn them... yes... trust me. Hehehehe do NOT worry about the Eldar... hehehe... they will get a revision and weaponry to put them fairly. The Kroot are fine (so far... 99% sure!)
