Ok, so I'll probably be starting a Chaos Cultist warband in the future and I had a few Space Marine parts lying around and I wanted to try my hand at the 'budget version' of truescaling (For which Arachas provided me with this link), So I decided to make a Tzeentch sorcerer (since I was reading the Horus Heresy book Thousand Sons...). It still needs a bit of cleaning up, but this is what I came up with:

Sorcerer of Tzeentch TSangle

Sorcerer of Tzeentch TSprofile

Sorcerer of Tzeentch TSfront

I also lined him up with one of my guardsmen and an, apparently tiny, Grey Knight space marine to demonstrate the added height gained by the truescaling.

Nice one. But staff look little unplayable, maybe consider trimming it a little to allow model to do some in building action?

I've learned hard way that high scenic bases, long banners and staffs, to big models and to much in hight poses may cause a lot of problems in leveled ruins of skirmish games.

But... When will we see it painted?

The height of the model is less than 3 inches, so it just fits (official GW building and my own have a distance of 3" between floors). But I'll see if I can do some 'field trials' to figure out if the staff needs some shortening.

As for painting...who knows when I have the time to do that...Still, it is a fun little project, so it might get pushed to the frotn of the painting que...:p

Dude... NICE!

Prius was complaining about how his marine wasn't turning out big enough... Wth! It looks awesome, man!

You should consider adding some more 'Chaosy' parts. Maybe Khemri bits that fit with the sorceror theme? He looks a tad vanilla, still.

Yeah, he could do with some more...stuff. However I think the Thousand sons where some of the less 'chaos-y' chapters that went to the dark side. Their official models are also a lot less freaky than say nugle marines.

I mean:

Khorn bezerkers:
Sorcerer of Tzeentch Khorne_Berzerker_by_nehrist

Slaanesh noise marines:
Sorcerer of Tzeentch Post-152648-1292921228

Nurgle Plague marines:
Sorcerer of Tzeentch E1943fc99361f03a12fa408358b9aee5

And then the clean (by comparisson) Thousand sons:
Sorcerer of Tzeentch Thousand_sons_variants

I was thinking about doing a cape or something, but that is hard to do well...

Couse TSons are only Traitor Legion free of mutation and sparkling with sorcery and arcane powers. Hell there is Ahriman [former TSons chief librarian] fraction who officially cut their alignment too Chaos and fight for themselves.

Flull wise during Great Crusade TSons where Legion suffering from mass mutation and close to be disbanded. Only their primarch Magnus trades with Tzeench stoped that till times of Heresy. Finally Ahriman sorcery stopped mutation and made TSons what they are now. So they can't be crude and ugly like Lesser Gods followers Wink

They are pure as only Chaos can be Very Happy

I just love TSons and World Eaters fluff *-*

Hmmm... why don't you magnetize the hand that has the banner? Would make it more 'playable'.

Reading through this I was about to suggest exactly the same as Mord did - magnetise the hand and have a bolt pistol hand (for example, or a spell casting one) to replace it.

The tutorial is really useful. I've been thinking of doing a Blood Angel of Nurgle (drawing on the original material publish in the fan-made Sourcebook Dornian Heresy) which might get used in a Chaos Cultist Warband and this would be a great opportunity to do a one-off truescale marine. Do please thank the original poster on warseer, if you get a chance.

Is he meant to be a Thousand Son or does he [edited in] belong to a different Chapter / Legion and has personally chosen to follow Tzeentch?

Funny I did some truescale pox angels (at least that was what I called them until someone directed me to the dornian heresy) - superb work and very inspiring for people who what some alternative options. Check out my truescale thread in painting and modelling to see what I came up with.

Cheers Laney Very Happy

The next truescale I do will be a nurgle corrupted techmarine (no particular chapter)

EDIT: Nice use of khemri parts on the sorcerer - I think he needs a cloak to make him more of a sorcerer though. The paint job should bring it all together really well.

Already seen those Laney, but thanks for the post. You used the 'art-scale' method (never heard that name before but the tutorial used it) and I'm thinking to go with this method as it means I don't need to buy anything extra. I will be drawing on your work for inspiration.

I think the Dornian Heresy is a great "gedankenexperiment" to test the boundaries of the fluff.

Looking forward to your work on that techmarine.

I also agree on the cape, it'd help. Maybe some Chaos-y decorations, like a Celtic knot, extra eye (like on one of the images) or other medieval magical symbol to strengthen both the magical and Chaotic link.

Ok, so cape is very much 'in', I just hope I can get it done as it should be done, but I am no greenstuff genious. As for magnetising, I dont have a clue where to pick up magnets of that size. I always hear 'radioshack' but we dont have those here in the Netherlands. I could swing by a audio specialist near me to see if they have them...(hmm, or I could try pinning it, but my guess is his hand will keep faling off...) I like the casting hand idea, but the arm angle and postion are a bit weird for the 'shooting lightning from fingertips' pose. I could try an open upward palm with a ball of fire floating above it. It is an 'epirimentation marine' so I could even try the painting technique of indirect lighting...

I also want to try something with the backpack/powerpack exsausts. I see a lot of dragon heads on the pictures, but I dont have those. How about skulls?

Btw, love the ideas and comments, they will only help making it better.

@ Mordheimer: None whatsoever!

On the magnets: you can usually pick up cheap, multiple sets of tiny neodymium magnets (you want the smallest with the strongest strength rating you can get) at a good price on e-bay.

Cheers Laney cheers

??? The stuff you get on eBay is good... make sure they are neodymium (rare earth) magnets at least N36 (this is their strength, the higher the better). What I meant is that the people who sell in eBay get them more KJ Magnetics... if you buy in bulk, you get WAY cheaper prices. For example...

100 discs (1/8" X 1/16") (great for SM heads and arms (and hands!)- eBay: $15. KJ Magnetics: $9 (for N42), $11 (for N52!)
50 cubes (3mm or 1/8") - eBay: $9. KJ Magnetics: $6.50

If you get a big order, the shipping to the Netherlands would be reduced. I would email them first. Wink Also... you could buy LOTS of them (1,000 N52 are $90) and then you could sell them in eBay with cheap shipping on the region!

The BEST thing... before buying, get calipers and measure the area. ALSO, check online tutorials for sizes.

Well there is more info on magnets then I ever thought I'd see. I have been looking at picking some of these up for my IG Squad (slowly WIP) so thanks for that!

My advice regarding the model:
Cape - You might want to consider using a cape stolen from another model and tucking it under the Space Marine Back / Power Pack. This means the joint is largely hidden, so your GS work isn't so obvious. Alternatively try using something like 0.5mm plasticard heated and bent into a wavy shape (I haven't tried this, so its a 'experimental' suggestion). Thirdly you could soak kitchen towel or tissue in watered down PVA (white) glue and then shape that over a set of struts sticking out of the models back. It might need a layer on both sides to hide the struts properly (I have used this method to create a tarpaulin, but not for something as delicate as a cape. Tearing the tissue creates a nice texture which could look good on a centuries old Chaos Sorcerer).

Hand - I would suggest against the electricity firing hand as it is a really common conversion. Instead maybe you could try something unusual - a clenched fist wreathed in flames, an Evil Eye gesture, a hand made of flame (painted Tzeentch purple Shocked). If I get any other ideas I'll let you know...

Backpack - Skulls would be very cool. You could even GS a crown of flames to continue the fire motif. Otherwise you could cut off the exhaust ports and rotate them so the flat surface is up and have flames coming out of that (taken from a White Dwarf, or other GW publication). Finally, if you have the old Mordheim building set there are some tiny 'gargoyles' which could be quite cool as exhaust ports.

Nice use of parts Colonel Prius especially the horned skull !.

I like to use plain Kroot rifle straps for my SM conversions as they fit well & have nice moulded details (like a buckle) they can be a little tricky to get hold of but are worth it for the effect Smile
