This is a really simple thing to do. I picked it up from Les at awesomepaintjob.com
Basically it gives you a little more control of how you hold your miniature while painting and keeps your fingers away off your base.

Blue Tac Mod Step1BlueTac

1. You need the figure you are painting setup on the base as you want it and ready to prime.
2. Loctite Blue Tac or similar product ( the blue stuff you use to put posters up on the wall so they don't have holes in your dry wall)
3. A old dried out Games workshop paint pot

Blue Tac Mod Step2BlueTac
make a ball of blue tack

Blue Tac Mod Step3BlueTac
push the blue tack onto the top of the lid for the Games Workshop Paint Pot so that it covers the whole top and is smoothed around the edges (this keeps it from pulling off as easy when you take your model off.

Blue Tac Mod Step4BlueTac
Push your model PUSHING ONLY ON the base firmly into the blue tac till you have it in the position you would like.

Blue Tac Mod Step5BlueTac
Prime Your model and your ready to paint.

If you would like to add some weight to the handle Les suggested filling the GW paint pots with sculpty clay. ( I haven't tried that yet.) Also if you want a bigger grip you can take two of the Games workshop pots and put the bottom to bottom and super glue them together that way you can grip it with your whole hand. If you get froggy you could even wrap the whole contraption in some foam tape. (ok maybe that could be going a little far.)

Hmmm... maybe this will solve my issue. Very Happy I always get finger cramps, I guess from holding the model from the base using only my fingertips. Mad Now... few questions.
  1. Can I keep using the same blue-tack, even if I get some paint over it? I mean, that thing is ~$3 per package.... makes an expensive holder if I can't re-use it if I get some paint on it by accident.
  2. If I get some paint on it... can I remove it and still use it to hold another model?

Now that I will enter a new 'painting phase', this will be of great help. THANKS!

Eventually it will not take anymore paint but it takes a long while. Not to mention the part that is sticky is usually under the base of the model your painting. I have not tried spray priming yet but im assuming that all you do is ball it back up and put it back on again no prolbems since the paint will just break up into the blue tac.

And one package at wal-mart was under 2 bucks. and that was enough to do at least 8-10 pots.

The paint will dry on the blue tack and you can just re-roll it. Some of the paint will flake off but it will leave some smaller particles that won't interfere at first but over time it will loose its bonding abilities due to the paint.

just my $0.05c worth.

great tutorial for those who haven't thought about it....

Cheers
