Hi All,

I thought I'd share with you a couple of WIP shots of the Freighter First Light from WorldWorksGames, that I intend to use in the next battle in the campaign I'm running - it's semi-modular so it should get a lot of use in the campaign and I may extend it by adding additional rooms eventually.

The compartments will all have tops in the end and a finished exterior.

You print that on regular paper? It is flimsy? Could you make a tutorial?

Yea, it is printed on paper. One thiing that WWG notes to use foamcore if possible between the sheets of paper to give the walls a "thicker" appearance.

02Laney....I might be reaching out to you to try a few things that we had worked on a long long time ago that fits exactly what you are doing now. If you are interested let me know.

I love what you are dong as it is great and WWG is a great company. I posted a link on WWG Picture thread to this thread.

Hi All,

Sorry for not replying sooner - I seem to have missed these posts...

Mordheimer - I printed on light cardstock 210gsm (I think you use different units in the US - but I'm sure you can work it out). As far as tutorials go - the instructions that some with the sets are superb (far better than any tutorial I could create) and many are downloadable as 'previews' for whatever set you are interested in.

Actually not that flimsy once it's all connected together and based on foamcore, black is better, white is alot cheaper (at least in the UK)

Da Bank - I've been playing around with some of the props and some other cardstock terrain - so no major updates (I had to use space hulk corridors for Game 3 and 4 of the campaign) - but I'm not sure I'm being precise enough - they are coming out a bit wonky.

I am hoping to get back to the freighter when the Varangians are finished (so much to do - so little time!). I might use foamcore (I must have missed that in the instructions somehow) in the walls on the second freighter (this one is for the games club - the next one is for my workshop).

Tell me more about this long time ago thing - always interested in helping out.

You are dead right about WWG - I only wish I'd found out about them sooner - great products and company.

Cheers Laney Smile

Hi All,

I've worked on the external parts of the ship - so you get a pretty good idea of the craft (the turrets - which look really complex and the basing are the next parts to do. Enjoy...

That hideous covering is one from the 70s-early 80s that my wife uses with our lad when he's painting. I've been told I've got to use it to 'so I don't make a mess!'

Plan on getting the ship completed tonight - but the turrets look pretty complex on the sheet.

That looks very nice. I found out about WorldWorksGames from this site, and have been contemplating buying some of their stuff. I love to make terrain, but I think a good idea and solid business model should always be rewarded. Nice to see they seem to put out a quality product.

As for the paper type used in the US for this sort of thing, I believe WorldWorksGames recommends 110lb cardstock, which you should be able to find at places like Staples, OfficeMax, etc.

How would you rate the experience of printing and building this thing?

Hi Corporal Dispensable,

In terms of the quality of resources they are top notch (in my limited experience), compared to other cardstock terrain I have seen out there. The detail on them is superb and the instructions are very easy to follow.

They aren't the easiest thing to build (primarily because I'm too impatient) in places e.g. the reactor on the ship was a trial. But for the most part they logically go together. The thing I'm most intrigued by is the kitbashing opportunity - I'm a conversion nut at heart and I'm already thinking about how I can model a science research station/base out of the parts in this kit (think forgeworld phaeton base - but not so grand).

I generally hate building and painting terrain (I'd much rather build a cardstock tank or plane or convert and paint a miniature) - but I love this stuff. WWG materials are superb and compared to the other terrain options e.g. GW (which I do like for looks), it will work out a load cheaper - with more options, props etc. As long as you don't mind cardstock terrain in general.

Cheers Laney

Hi All,

Just a couple more pics of the freighter- I've built a few props - including a very cool holo display from the firstlight retrofit set (which also has a cardstock shuttle - for any squad commander with enough credits to spare and not enough real cash for a valkyrie or arvus lighter). I've also added turrets and fully based it - just got the trim and the rest of the props to go.

This stuff is really good and in the next couple of weeks start a large research base (xeno biologus) as a piece of terrain is my intention. I'll post a concept sketch (plan) when I next get the chance.

These are the plans...

These are great, but you can probably go even more epic with them.

According to the Rogue Trader book, there are no small ships in the 40k universe. The smallest ship might have a crew of 10,000 if I recall, maybe even up to 100,000.

So if you want to keep your design smaller, you can have these builds be a small part of a much larger ship.

This is the out of the box design (so it could count as an in-system transport/lander) and I've got bigger plans for a research station using the kit (and kitbashing with a couple of other sets), so epic is definitely on the cards. I suppose I'm going for the GW approach to scaling (whatever suits my needs Smile ).

Is that the dark heresy rogue trader book? If so, is it good, I've been meaning to get hold of it for a while now.

On the question of size - I think the fantasy flight books count as fluff rather than canon, because there many precedents for smaller (100s rather than 1000s of crew) ships in the ravenor series (smallish rogue trader ships mentioned), the grey knight books and the soul drinker series (though the latter two examples refer to either specialist ordo malleus craft or xeno technology). Either way, the ability to move small squads between planets makes for a more interesting game (even if slightly breaking the official line), both in death squads and dark heresy - can you imagine a ship with several thousand crew being mobilised to move some no mark henchmen (whether they belong to the inquisition or not!)?

A part of space hulk/cruiser (multi-layered) will likely follow long term - If I have enough room/ink!

Cheers cheers

You are one CRAZY man!

If I get a hold of your sketches, I probably burn the corners and 'age' them... then FRAME them! WOW! Screw the ship... the sketched are killing me!
