The Citadel paint range just got bigger! I was at my local GW store yesterday and they were showing off the new paints (145 in total). The general impression was good, with a few points of interest... More base colours (foundation paints) than before and they covered pretty well on a quick test, 'dry' paints for drybrushing (looked good for basing etc), textured paints (if you can't be bothered to stick on sand and paint it - buy this paint instead) - good if you are looking to speed paint a small army (otherwise it'll cost you a fortune - still comes in the small bottles).

Best of all were the glazes (4 colours) and the shades (washes), which had an expanded green, orange and yellow range. This was something I can use.

The down side is that they have changed the names of every paint (even black), so they gave me a handy conversion chart to work out which are new and which are not. Also, with more paints, the online and WD painting tutorials will be less 'mix 1part chaos black with 2 parts shadow grey etc' and more use 'our new paint x and then our new paint y etc). However, a better range of paints is always a good thing! (Where is my wallet?Just Kidding )

Shame there is still no airbrush specific versions, but still pretty good.

Anyone else tried any out yet?

Cheers Laney:D

Saw them too today.

First impression was that they had made something similar to the Valejo "triads" which could very well make it easier to shadow / base / highligt mini's in my opinion. But did not get a good look at them, as I was hunting the valejo air colours Wink

This x2
Screw the pots
only thing they are good for is making a painting handle. take 2 pots glue the bottoms together wrap in textured tape. add blueTak to the top you got a nice painting handle.

The lack of droppers is an easy fix though, just buy a load of cheap dropping pipettes from a school type supplier, job done! I rarely use a palette unless I'm mixing a colour (shocking bad practice I know), but the lack of droppers isn't really a problem for me. The ease of going to the local GW and picking up paints has me hooked for the most part.

I was going to do some painting yesterday (like my PE), but discovered that most of my paint has dried out...
So it's a good time for some new paints! Will visit the local GW soon. Smile

That is my problem with GW paints. Their pot design allows paint to dry up.

I have vajello paints that I have had for 3 years and i can shake em up and use them even now. The big diffrence also is the amount of pigment in the paint. (excluding the foundation which i do have a few of and do like). Most of the GW paints just are not as high of a quality paint. If you use any additive you have to mix up twice as much to get the same results as you could have used half for with VGC (Vajello game color) paints.

I am mixed on the new paints.

I like that the range has expanded. I really hope that the new colours will actually directly align for basecoats and highlights the way that the reaper triads do. I found the constant blending and mixing to get highlights with some of the old GW colours to be pretty tedious. Lots of the colours did not really have a good highlight colour within the old range. Some of the new paints look pretty interesting too. It is really annoying that the names have all changed though. Chaos black and blood red and goblin green were pretty classic names.

That being said, I don't really anticipate buying any new GW colours any time soon. Most of my paints are droppers now as it is much easier to use on my palette and with my airbrush. The vallejo range also does everything that the new GW paints do (except maybe the paint mixed with texture). I really dislike the newish GW pots as they won't stay open.

Overall, the change to more colours is good. New painters who begin with this range will have a better selection for basing and highlights. Older hobbyists will have a bit of a frustrating transition. I will just be annoyed as I will have to translate the new colours to the old ones and then to other ranges when I look at painting guides.

Yeah I agree Narcissus, the new names will be a problem for me too. I heard/read that it was a copyright issue and that GW has transferred the production to a new manufacturer.

I definitely need to investigate the Vallejo triads and the joys of dropper bottles (seems there is an overwhelming consensus towards them). They did fix the lids on the pots - they have a little clip to keep them open now.

Cheers Laney

I have Vallejo Paints that are 6 years old and work like a CHAMP! And I left the bottles on the window, so they got heat up on the Florida summer sun on 2009 for some months.

Dropers all the way!

Pft, I have GW paints that's 15 years old still works perfect.

Honestly, I don't know why people hate the paints from GW so much. I've used them half a lifetime and never had any issues with the quality except for some of the pots as not all versions of them are very good. I bought some Vallejo game colours last year and I wasn't impressed at all. Same coverage as GW's and the dropper gets clotted with dryed paint after a few months.

Yeah sometimes that works, but now I had a Dwarf Bronze which was dried out so much I had to hack it loose with a toothpick! Very Happy

From what I've read and heard those 15 year old pots could be from the old producer of the paints which was a good one. They say it's the same producer of paint ranges like Coat D'arms and P3 which should be very good. And now (rumor says) GW has moved back to that producer so the new paints should be awesome! Smile
