Two new 40k Novels just came out and they are full of great fluff and background material for Death Squads.

http://www.blacklibrary.com/new-titles/warhammer-40000

Iron Guard is a complete book and is like $8.00. I have read the first few chapters and is offers great insight on Hive Life and then transforms into being part of the Mordian army. The book is on squad level and matches up perfectly with DS.

The other book is "Survivor". it is a short story, 60 pages and I believe is $2.99. Wow! Very neat as it gives insight about a ruined city, infested by Orks and a lone 10 year boy. The name of the boy is Bas, short for Sebastian. His full name is Sebastian Yarrick!

Any recommendations for really good 40k books? I haven't read any. I discovered that the library has some so I might put holds on some and try to read them. Please recommend some good reads for me (not just teen bloodfest sci-fi novels, must have a good story!).

The Iron Guard Novel looks good - I'm reading Fallen Angels, then Legion, followed by Deliverance Lost - then maybe Iron Guard!

@Narcissus: For me these are the best 40k novels... (I've been told the Gaunts Ghosts Novels are ace, but I haven't read them)

The Inquistor Eisenhorn Omnibus (brilliantly written and in-depth information on the 40k universe, plus it leads into the Ravenor series, which is almost as good)

Any Ciaphas Cain novels - very tongue in cheek, Comissar Ciaphas Cain is an Imperial hero, who is not quite what he seems. He'd rather run from the fight, but always seems to find himself in the thick of the action saving the day (and getting another medal in the process). Now on novel 10 or 11 and getting a little formulaic, but the early novels are the best 40k has to offer.

If it's Space Marines... Stick to the Horus Heresy (I've not read the Ultramarines or Space Wolves novels)

The Soul Drinkers series is a personal favourite, because it investigates the events leading to a chapter becoming renegade. HOwever, it isn't particularly well written

Don't read the Blood Angels books by James Swallow. They are the only 40k books that I couldn't finish (awful)

Of the Horus Heresy books...

The Primarchs (relatively new) a series of four novellas

Flight of the Eisenstein (includes Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard - founder of the Inquisition)

Galaxy in Flames and Horus Rising are good books to introduce the Heresy

Some of the Warhammer Novels are worth a look too...

Brunner the Bounty Hunter series

Matthas Thulmann Wtch Hunter series

Thanquol and Boneripper series

All the novels above are pretty basic stories (action takes precedent) and they aren't likely to win many literary awards, but they are good fun.

Hope this Helps

@narc

Yes, I would start out with the Caiphas Cain, Gaunts ghosts, and Last Chancers novels.

Fear the Alien, Priest of Mars, Sabat World Anthonolgy, Soul Hunter or all the Night Lord books.

These novels is what inspired me to start this game.

I never liked 40k until I started reading the novels and these books listed and others are all squad based, yes it does have large armies but you see the plights only threw a few characters.

That is why Mordheimer and I started out with Space Hulk game. IG versus Nids and with everyone we have created a pretty robust 40k skirmish game.

Gaunts Ghosts are fun, I also really like the Eisenhorn trilogy. Found some of the horus heresy books to be very very bad, and most are 'alright' with only a few that where somewhat memorable. The advice I would give, if you are going to read a 40k novel, pick something from Dan Abnett (author of above mentioned Gaunt's ghosts and Eisenhorn (and Ravenor as well)).

@Laney and Colonel: Great Options.

@Narc: What do you like Imperial Guard,Eldar, Chaos or Space Marines?

That will help pinpoint which books to choose.

Those with many of the imperial guards you will have IG, Chaos, Cultist, Rebels, Kroot, Eldar and etc in them.

Those 2 novels sound really good, I'm especially interested in Survivor!

@Narcissus: I like the Gaunts Ghosts series very much, Soul Drinkers is indeed good, I really enjoyed Storm of Iron (although it's a bloodfest), from the Ultramarines I've read these: Nightbringer, Warriors of Ultramar (good), Dead Sky Black Sun (quite bizar as it takes place in the eye of Terror) and on my night stand I still have waiting to be read the 3 books from the Salamander Series which I hope to be good.

From Fantasy I really enjoyed Gotrek & Felix, the Brunner the Bounty Hunter and Witch Hunter series were also good. I've read pretty much from the fantasy range, some I remember which were nice are Rider of the Dead, Fell Cargo and The Dead and the Damned (short stories).

And then I have a lot of graphic and background books which are really cool like Xenology (study of the alien species => darn sweet!), Imperial Infantrymans Uplifting Primer, The Witch Hunter's handbook, Blood on the Reik (must have! Awesome inspiration stuff!), Liber Chaotica (complete work on Daemons etc), Liber Necris (The Book of Death in the Old World), The Inquisition: An illustrated guide to the secretive protectors of the imperium and some others I can't come up with now.

Update

The Iron Guard book is getting interesting.

The IG had to split their forces for two different planets.

The small hive city was over run by humans that are now feral and hunt the non affected humans at night. The feral humans are tough to kill and are very fast.

Now, the Dark Eldar just showed up and the Archon and 36 DE warriors are going down to the planet to get some old DE technology.

I'd offer that Dead Men Walking is decent. It's no Eisenhorn, but it's not bad.

Agreed Dead Men Walking is a good story - lots of the IG stories are worth a read - Omnibus for the win!

Cheers Laney:D

I think I might work on a scenario for these guys. I just purchased Only War 11th hour. 40k RPGS supplement. It came out this last spring and it gave me a great idea and the material is also discussed in a 40k novel.

Long story short, your squad is stuck behind enemy lines. You are on a death world full of swamp, trees, dangers, and Orks. In 11 hours one part if the planet is going to receive orbital bombing.

Where can I post this concept and have people chime in with ideas and etc?
Though this section seems good for it but in a separate thread.

I will try to get some stuff written up ths weekend on it an post it.
It seems this might be better suited for one one off game or something special like that.

Sounds cool! I would suggest posting on the Vol. 1, CORE RULES: Questions, Observations & Suggestions with the title being something like "Scenario: name"
