What to do with IG sergeants?

While constructing my last squad I was pondering this question: how do I equip my sergeants?

They start out with WS4, which makes them (more) fit for close combat. However, I often find it a waste to just stick pistols on my models, especially my officers. I can usually use the range on autoguns really well.

What do you guys do? Swords & pistols? Autoguns? Shotguns, swords and a combat knife?

The Sgts are versatile in a Campaign. They evolve quickly. For the 1st few games, autogun, sword & chain is OK... then you see how they evolve. If they go for shooting, then a shotgun is always fun! You can pass the Autogun to the Recruits. If more CC, then replace the sword with chainsword.

My plan is colse to what Mordheimer says...

1st game thay get a club and no more, but will slowly get chainsword, shield, flak armor, helmet and shotgun.

This makes they good at supporting my combat units, whit the shotguns close range support, chargeting in combat behind recruits with close combat weapons.

I dont expect them to be fully equipt before after 6-8 games, this is when they should have some skills and plusses to make tham worth something.

Well, a part of my problem is that my squads rarely make it past game 6 or so, haha. I get bored and want to play something else. Or I don't play for a while and lose track!

Another part of my problem is that pistols kinda suck, so my guys usually end up with rifles instead. Then they switch to CC weapons in hand-to-hand... I don't know, I like the imagine of a 40k sarge with chainsword and pistol, but I can't justify it in DS. Though I guess firing them in CC is pretty cool, but still: short range, usually not that powerful...

In that case I would get shotguns (or use autoguns as shotguns) and get (chain)swords + club.

I too find that pistols not really worth it in most cases. Exceptions is Ork pistols (blastas ?) and the Bolt Pistol going for S4 in combat and short range shooting.

Most of the time, Autopistols, Laspistols, Sluggas and Hellpistols is most for fluff for me.

I tend to use the Sergeant types as counter-assault units. They sit back just behind your front line and either intercept or charge into existing combats. They don't usually have enough punch in early campaign to run solo. As such I equip them with a sword pistol combo, and the first upgrade being the Bolt Pistol or a Hellpistol.

I also ended up creating a gunslinger at one point with one of the sergeants. He had two hellpistols.....standing still at that time of the game he could pump out 8 shots (albiet only once).

A shotgun backed up by two CC weapons isn't a bad way to go though.
