I picked up some weathering pigments yesterday (Vallejo and Secret Weapon) and was wondering if any of you have experience with using them and can point me to a decent guide. I've read the Forge World guide here and am looking for more pointers.

Laney have used them. I think Korfitten and Narcissus too!

I have used them with mixed success. I found having the right colours is essential. What colours do you have and what effect are you wanting to achieve?

The toughest thing with them, in my opinion, is the finishing issue. If they are to be used in games they need to be sealed. When you varnish overtop you lose a lot of the effect though. What I have done so far is to matte varnish first, apply pigment, then give another very light varnish coat.

Post up questions and your pigments and I can try to help.

From Vallejo I've got brown iron oxide, carbon black, and light sienna. I grabbed Violet from Secret Weapon.

My thought for the violet is mostly for shading on flesh. The brown iron oxide and carbon black would primarily be for distressing metal. I see the light sienna, along with one of the others, used for dirt and mud on boots and such.

Just playing around with it on a few figs, using it over a vanished model seems to work well, another shot of spray to hold it in place. Liberal application counteracts the dulling of the varnish.

Post some pictures of your results! I am really interested to see the shading on skin.

Here's a Kroot I've played with.

Weathing Pigments Kroot

Skin is a 1:1 mix of Scorpion Green and Off White, all the shading is with the violet pigment from SW. I tried to get some rust on the metal and dirt on his feet.

Wow! That model looks VERY good! The pics are amazing too! Damn.... that model looks fantastic! The more I look at it, the more I like that purple!

Question... is it finished? I have few observations... nothing major really.

1) Eyes: No pupils? It looks good like that, but I think that pupils add a new dimension of details.

2) Single color Kroot Rifle: I did NOT noticed at first... but eventually I did. The gun is one color, with some shades. I mean... look at the handle.

As you see... they are minimalistic observations. Maybe things you notice IF you pic the model up close, but not from a distance. Anyone would be PROUD to show a model like that in his collection!

Thanks for sharing!

I think it's pretty much done. I might touch up a few parts, but time for another model.

I may try pupils, but I'm really, really bad at them.

The rifle isn't supposed to be single color, but wound up that way. The wrapping is a different shade, but I was sloppy and kept the stock and barrel the same shade, didn't think of it until after I was pretty committed. The metal and the wrapping strangely look very similar after the weathering, though they started silver and brown. You can also see that on the rear shot, the blade, handle, and bag are different colors, thoug wound up closer than planned.

I worked on another, kroot gun is better, tried to keep the pigment in the recess on the torso, wound up with more on the head.

Very nice. What type of brush are you using to apply the pigments? Is this model sealed yet?

Ace looking Kroot!

On the weathering pigment thing - I've only used Tamiya pigments and then sealed with a matt varnish. The only advice I have for them is less is definitely more.

Actually, one more bit - I use a mix of washes, pigments and drybrushing to create most weathering effects (the pigments are great for final touches).

One more try, spent more time on this AoBR Captain than I did on the Kroot, I think it shows.

Very nice job on the Captain (I love the dark purple). Is he a Soul Drinker? I had an Army of Soul Drinkers that I sold a few years back.

Hawk Lords, though the color scheme appears the same.

Any updates on your use of weathering pigments? I like how the kroot skin looks. Do you lose the detail when you varnish?
