Kickstarter: Beyond the Gates of Antares

Have just read some of the text, but haven't seen the videos. Looks interesting though.

Same here. I'm intruigued but not enough to watch any of the videos or seriously look at whats going on yet. Some good looking mock ups and preliminaries of minis so far. I hope it turns into a too good to pass on type of deal.

I've been following this - but they must up their game to make it viable - asking for £300,000 was a mistake though. They should be into stretch goals and have more content to show (even concepts would help). On the other hand, the gameplay video sounded great.

We'll see.

I'm not sure if my budget will stretch to another kickstarter at the minute.

The game sounds interesting but there are not enough greens or cast models on display so far. My first interest in a game is definitely based on the asthetics so this is definitely a no go for me.

Also, as much as I was excited by the Sedition Wars Kickstarter, I don't think I will be pledging to any kickstarter campaigns in the foreseeable future. The final model quality is much more important to me than getting a discount and extras and so in the future I think I will wait until a product is released so I can just pick and choose the items I really want to paint and play.

Kickstarter is an interesting phenomenon... The different ways people regard it in particular... The 'purists' who believe that pledging is about supporting a project (it always interests me who would pledge if there was nothing on offer though), the 'I want more stuff' types (which while tempting to act like that they often come across spoilt children) and then everyone else who want a project to happen and the prospect of a gaming/hobby bargain in the process is a huge bonus.

I find myself backing projects that I want to see happen and because of this I am genuinely interested in the product. I was backing Kingdom Death for example and while it was a great deal it became too much of a cash drain so I pulled out in favour of the much less popular Through the Breach, because I felt the product a) needed my backing and b) was offering something I was really interested in having and playing (more so than KD, which would have sat on a shelf for too long waiting for my boys to get old enough for the content of it).

I'm really excited by Sedition Wars for the miniatures and the game is secondary, with Zombicide it was the other way round, Through the Breach was a mix. Darklands is a strange mix of gambling (given the Maelstrom connection) and some awesome minis - I want to see it work!.

Gates of Antares doesn't offer anything at the minute I couldn't already done with Infinity and be sure of what I was getting - I watch with interest.

Sounds like a nice project, but what I'm looking for is a squads based miniatures game which is multiplayer. We used to play Mordheim with 4 guys and those days still count as my best gaming experience.

Laney, you mention wanting to support the projects. I think this is the mentality that Kickstarter projects want you to have. I believe that this is the case for the "grassroots" projects. They need the capital to really get off the ground. With bigger ones like the CMoN releases I am pretty sure that the project is finished (largely) and has already been developed and everything. It seems like the kickstarter is a way to guarantee sales and to create a lot of hype for a product. It is a really interesting phenomena to follow. I think it really creates a sense of ownership for the pledgers and creates a lasting connection to the project. It will be interesting to see the long term impact these kickstarters have. Will they become successful games or will they end up being one off releases?

Exactly - Will Sedition wars and Kingdom Death, for example, grow?

I started looking for shiny bargains (no harm there), but actually I don't need another half ton of minis coming my way at the minute. Every Kickstarter thread on Dakka Dakka seems to generate the 'What is a valid kickstarter?' question and a remarkable degree of upset in some cases.

For me, if it's on kickstarter it's valid and kickstarter is what I want it to be.
