Visitors Campaign: Game 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields)

General Vladimir Erchart scanned the reports coming in from the regions surrounding the Hive City of Erethane. Things seemed quiet, given that only months before the world was infested with millions of murderous Orks.

The underhive was alive with rumours of monsters in the darkness. These monsters were cunning green killers who preyed on the scum that drifted to the bottom of the hive. Given the planets recent history of troubles there could be only one conclusion; Orks infested the lower reaches. The only way to deal with Orks was to burn them out!

Unfortunately, all the available squads were busy scouring the equatorial forests for remnants of Waaagh Dripsnot! General Erchart was an old campaigner who’d been abandoned by the Imperial Fleet and Lord Star General Kalsmicht, with a few regiments of Imperial Guard and some sorry PDF units for company. The only squad left to him for this mission was a unit of Whiteshields from the 75th Allansian, led by the untried Captain Josef Thornett.

As far as Erchart could tell from his intelligence officers, Thornett showed little or no initiative and was nothing more than an inbred noble from the feudal recruiting world of Allansia. There was nothing for it though; he was all the General had.

‘Gerint!’ called Erchart to his adjutant, ‘get me Captain Thornett of the 75th. I have a job for him.’

Underhive 42b sub-level 98...

Thornett looked at his men with watery blue eyes; twirling the fine waxed mustache that clung to his top lip. He grimaced, revealing perfect white teeth.

Under-equipped and as green as they come they might be, but a hero has to begin somewhere, he thought.
And yet the grim darkness of the underhive was all that seemed to be in his future... that and sneaky Orks!

Battle Report: Scenario Resource Hunt
The Allansian 75th vs. The Green Devils Kommandos v2.0

Pict of Underhive 42b sub-level 98
Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010110

The Allansians grouped into two fire teams on the far Western side of the sub-level.
Reports suggested that the Orks were advancing across the sub-level from the East.

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010111

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010112

The Ork Kommandos in advanced positions laid low in an attempt to avoid the hail of fire about to open up from
the raised Allansian positions. A guardsmen fire team led by Sergeant Cruysler advanced on their position and
Privates Alfred Boot and Cale Bucket trained their autoguns on the prone Orks (who were being as sneaky as Orks can be).

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010113

The Green Devils Flash Git advanced with two recruits on the enemy positions. Accurate fire with his shoota allowed
him to take first blood, knocking down one of the Captains young recruits (The battle was soon to get bloody!).

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010114

Sergeant Cruysler secured one of the objectives hidden within an abandoned Manufactorum, supported by two of
his recruits. Private Barrington Smythe also secured another objective at the top of a wrecked hab tower. Things
looked good for the guardsmen, until they opened fire... One hit out of seven attempts, which pinged off the Kommandos
tough hide without causing injury. Finally, the veteran medic Corporal Godfrey stepped up and a single shot from
his autopistol downed one of the Kommandos (K.D.).

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010115

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010116

Meanwhile, a sneaky Ork Burna Boy had climbed to the top of Hab tower 3 and secured the third objective and the
fourth went to the Ork Sneaky Boss on the Eastern side of the Manufactorum. Each side now controlled two objectives.

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010117

The Ork Boss RipRot and his Ard Boyz advanced under cover of two smoke grenades, which also helped to shield
the Kommandos from further fire. Ineffectual fire was exchanged on both sides by the Flash Git and the Autogun
wielding guardsmen. Then, all hell broke loose...

The Orks (The boss, 2 ard boyz and 2 kommandos) charged the IG position in the centre of the battlefield, between
the Manufactorum and the Hab towers. Creating all kinds of carnage as recruits fell to the savage attack. Cruysler
had left it too long to escape with the objective and now his fire team was in tatters and an angry Ork Boss was
bearing down on him! 3 IG Recruits, 1 Sergeant and an Ork Kommando went OOA during the close combat – over two turns.

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010118

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010119

Worse was yet to come... The Orks opened fire on the Southern edge of the sub-level taking down (OOA) of
the recruits and the Flash Git (who had been involved in a protracted fire fight with Captain Thornett for most
of the game) hit the IG leader with a critical hit sending him sprinting away from the battle before collapsing OOA
from blood loss. The IG squad was in pieces with the only veteran left being Corporal Godfrey (the Medic) who
set about organising a fighting retreat, which the Allansian squad did effectively.

Private Bucket opened fire from his elevated position and took one of the Ork Ard Boys OOA to salvage some pride
from a terrible defeat. The final objective was secured by the other Ork Ard Boy as the game ended.

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010120

Final Tally...

Orks: 3 objectives captured with 1 officer and 1 recruit OOA. ORK WIN!

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010121

IG (Cadians) – Horde of Whiteshields: 1 objective captured with 2 officers and 5 recruits OOA.

Visitors Campaign 1: Hunting for Monsters (Orks vs. IG Whiteshields) P1010122

Post Game...

Allansian 75th
IG lost one recruit, with the others surviving. Captain Thornett now has scars which cause fear and the Sergeant Cruysler is now T2 due to a chest wound.
The IG captured the Ork Ard Boy and sold him for 45 credits (which also gained the Captain advancement – Skill: Steady Shot).
IG gained 3E.R. in total and sold it for 65 credits; they also found a corpse carrying a frag grenade.
They replaced the dead guardsman, put 15 credits in the bank, purchased a bolter for the sergeant (at T2 no real choice) and a heavy stubber for the other Heavy Weapon Specialist.

A better post game than actual game

The Green Devils Kommandos
The Ard Boy was captured and returned for a reasonable 45 credits. The Kommando survived the encounter.

Advancements:
Nob: T+1
Sneaky Boss: S+1
Flash Git: Eagles Eyes
Ard Boy: BS+1
Ard Boy: W+1
Burna Boy: Ld+1

They gained 140 credits and discovered an abandoned convenience store containing two frag grenades.

3 Smoke Grenades were bought to replace those used in the previous game (these are absolutely essential for Kommando style squads). They bought a chain choppa for the Nob, Snazzgun for the Flash Git. They have 24 credits left to spend.

Next Up... Cultists vs. Whiteshields

Holy Emperor's Flatulence... that game was AWESOME! Love the terrain and the action was brutal. The Orks... wow! +1 Toughness for the Nob?!?!? YIKES!!! All the Ork advancements are gonna make this a powerful Squad. Can't wait until Orks vs. Cultists.

Thanks mate - copying from Word always seems to go wrong!

Glad you liked the game. The Cultists have played the Whiteshields (I'm not giving anything away though).

Cooool! SOMEONE ELSE IS PLAYING THIS GAME BUT ME! Wink

See, that is awesome: levels in your terrain. Once I finish painting Cadians, I definitely need to add some kind of catwalk system to my terrain. Very cool stuff, mate!

Thanks for making the effort to post this, Lanes, it's a fun read and I love the pics! Your models are far too sexy for the terrain though, you need to add some paint to that table. Wink

On making battle reports: call me silly, but I always write this stuff up in the forum editor. I just take pics with my phone (good camera on the Samsung Galaxy S), which are automatically uploaded through the Photobucket app I use. I just go through the pics and write as I paste them in. I guess my memory works well enough for this approach.

Cheers Corintus (not sure I'll get used to that!)

I loved playing the game for the first time in ages. Recently, it's been all Zombicide and Talisman (simple and fun). While I am looking forwards to the arrival of Sedition Wars (the models look amazing (check out the not-Riddick model!) - but the release is delayed), it will have to stretch a great deal to beat a good game of DS! I have a second battle report to come - cultists vs. IG Whiteshields (very interesting game).

Edit: The terrain was mostly packing from electrical goods and the tower/catwalk was from my older lads Hexbug toys (which aren't a cost effective way of building terrain if I didn't already have it! I need to take another look at World Works Games for cheap, easy to construct and pretty terrain (I hate painting terrain - it feels like I'm wasting time unless it is an objective marker of some sort).

On a side note... Rumours suggest that McVey will bring out a skirmish game that uses sedition wars characters at some point in the future (please, please be by kickstarter to give away lots of goodies!)

Call me whatever you like. Smile

Those ARE amazing models. What is Sedition Wars? (Yes, I am too lazy to Google it).

WWG is currently running a 35% off sale (November new Releases and Terraclips not included) so it's a great time to fill in any gaps. I bought 5 or 6 sets last time they did a sale, haven't downloaded anything yet as I have no time and no group. The printed buildings you're using, are those from Mars Station?

Claus Lars - They are from one of the older sets - not sure which - I'll try to find my old copies on my other laptop and tell you. The terrain you can build is lovely - but still time consuming. I like the ready made Malifaux stuff (If only they did a sci-fi version of this).

Corintus - check out this thread http://www.deathsquadsgame.com/t2704-kickestarter-sedition-wars-battle-for-alabaster and you can link to the now complete kickstarter.

Depending on your printing costs, I've read on their forums that the premade line (Terraclips) can actually work out cheaper than TLX. Necroblock looks awesome for 40k, but with no interiors I feel like it would be limited in DS. They are supposed to be coming out with a destroyed version of it though, which should solve that problem nicely.

I'm very tempted by the streets of malifaux and the buildings just for the quality, use and ease of building. A few kits over time (maybe for Christmas) and I'd be done (then I could concentrate on building a few nice bits of terrain).

Yeah, they look gorgeous and seem to be a snap to use once you get over the learning curve. There are plenty of planets in the Imperium that would have that level of tech for the common folk, and I'd have to double check sewers (or some of the dungeon line) but it could probably do for some underhive.

They have said Sci-Fi stuff is planned, but no word on when.

It's still flat cardboard. Sure it looks cool, but it's not as cool as real build terrain.

Laney - I think you may be overestimating the time involved in building terrain. Well, maybe if you want to reach as high a level as your minis, that is. In truth, though, you should do what my friend (Toyama on this forum) has done: various 6mm MDF tiles. Stick buildings on there (mix and match GW buildings and various discarded electronic devices). Spray-paint the whole lot, a touch of drybrushing and you have terrain that's perfectly usable for gaming.

For roads he's simply stuck strips of a sort of toy-road paper rolls to the MDF tiles. Fill everything up with random patches of plastic foliage (available at every IKEA or petstore) and: done.

Sure, it won't look TOP notch. But in my experience the MODELS make the game, not the terrain. As long as there's basic coloring in there, it'll do fine.

While I haven't printed or built any of their stuff I doubt most fans of WWG would argue that it can ever look as good as true 3d terrain. Where it absolutely wins for me is storage.

I really like the colour and 'texture' you get with this type of terrain, add the flexibility of the terra clips (buildings of any size, shape and levels) and the fact that it packs away in a box and t is a major draw. I have a ton of terrain building stuff clogging up my shed, which could be replaced by a few boxes in the corner and a few special pieces that I can spend time on to enhance the overall look of the battlefield.

It's also much, much cheaper than GW terrain or similar plastic/resin terrain.

Miniatures take up enough time as it is!

Very nice battle report. I am guessing you were controlling the orks? How did your recruits like the game?

I played the orks and my nephew played the IG. He has played a couple of games before and has enjoyed it, but is more of a modeller and painter than a player (a little like me I suppose).

The orks played really well (and was very impressed with the ultra lucky flash git) - this type of ork squad relies on toughness to shrug off shots, lots of smoke grenades and laying low (very kommando, but not very orky). The autoguns just couldn't penetrate their hides most of the time (bolters and heavy stubbers will make a difference in the next game though - it might have made my attack slow down and they might have forced a draw on the objectives).

The second game (cultists vs IG Whiteshields) was with my brother, Mick (no-one ever calls him Michael, except my Mum). He is less into gaming and more into railway modelling (yawn!Sleep), but he was the one who introduced me to Bloodbowl and Heroquest all those years ago.
