I saw something like this for Dungeons and dragons a while back ago. Looks awesome. The cool thing would be if the bases could house a chip that included the information so when you set the figure down it knew what it was and all it's movement stats.
And of course a 4x4 or 4x6 table would be great also. Though one cool thing would be to impliment the technology of the movement based gaming systems like this by placing a camera above your gaming table. Then use a big lcd tv to monitor the game by doing measurement like this does. and you would still be able to stand on terrain you made:) Still not inside it though.
