PostSubject: Death of a leader. IG vs IR.   Death of a leader. IG vs IR. I_icon_minitimeTue Jul 27, 2010 4:47 am

This are just some pictures of a game of hard beating for my Inquisitorial Retinue.
G.Ras’ Imperial Renegades just got lucky nearly all the time. At some moments the grace of the Emperor fell upon my poor squad and they did nicely. I’ll try not to complain to much. Now I’ve a new aim: Just recover!

Here I did my greatest mistake and move my Leader into some apparently cover. At last from my point of view it was cover. Damn shadows tricked me and the so solid wall transforms into the grill-like-thing it was all the time. About 2/3 of the IR opened fire on her and slay her utterly.

More moving & shooting. Techpriest with heavy stubber goes OOA and big ugly mutant (T5, Sv3+) moves on to crush my recruits Rank & File. But concentrated fire send him OOA, too.

IR-Ogryn charges Assassin and tries to beat her to death but this time I got lucky and save all armor saves.

Sarge and Flamer gets shoot and I rout.

Postbattle:
IR: Big ugly mutant causes fear now, again and one shooty officier suffers -1S.
IG: Leader Lady Inquisitor Xanthia dies! Techpriest suffers -1M and Flamer-Servitor dies, too.
A serious blow for me. Never again Academic Skills for my officiers as only a Captain could get them. Maybe there should be an option for a new leader to get access to those skills. I don’t know if only the IG is struck with this problem. Haven’t checked the other squads.

But nothing was that grim in the next battle. Skraag already wrote the battle report. It seems, my Inquisitorial Retinue shifts more and more to a Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator squad.

I just forgot that it was an Inquisitoral Squad and as the Inquisitor was dead and everyone had a nice red dress and some mechanical bits on them I just assumed they were Adeptus Mechanicus Smile

Ha! Great terrain, and even better Battle Report! Too bad about Lady Inquisitor Xanthia ... Aquila Skull Aquila

The issue with the Academic is somethig to look at... but I think is something across all Squads. Thanks!

We used one set of Necromunda Terrain and two sets of old 2. Edition 40K paper ruins for our first games but the tables tended to be way to overloaded with cover and LOS-blocking Terrain. This was our first game with less terrain and the gaming experience definitely improved. Still the Necromunda terrain will be used again in future games and we now have up to three sets available Smile

That old Necromunda terrain sure brings back memories!

I remember one time where we played a game with shitloads of sets. There was terraib everywhere and it really felt like an section of the underhive.

But it was almost impossible to play the table because of all the buildings. You could not use the measuring sticks at all and it was really hard to move your miniatures without moving walkways out of the way or getting your hand stuck...

I would like to nake that kind of terrain in plasticard or something similar. I'vve found that "plataformer" stuff that someone here mentioned and i think that combied with some bulkheads (like in another battle report) would come really close to the original Becromundan terrain.... Awesomeness!!

That is something I noticed... your tables seemed to be BARE. I don't mean this one... I mean all in particular. There are few places for fighters to go. If your Scenario is in an urban environmental, make sure your table packs the proper terrain. We can climb, jump and other stuff... which can't be done in 40k. Of course, if you are playinf 'outside' the terrain could be less packed... but we still use LOTS of 'vegetation' terrain.

The loss of LoS across the table, and the increase chance of gaining a 5+ Cover Save is part of the game. Remember, if a fighter is 6', then each inch represents 3'. A lasgun can fire up to 24", or 72 feet! In a warzone, having 25' radius (8") without cover is difficult, but exists. 50' (16")... well, that is a different story. Definitely not an urban environment.

Please define "the gaming experience definitely improved". Is it that now everyone can see each other, thus it becomes a shooting fest? Is it that 50% of the fighters are OOA before anyone can get to Close Combat? It is important to know what you guys see and expect!

Our packed terrain means (to us) that we have 1 or 2 turns to get everyone in position, prepare firing lanes and move the fighters in position... who ever gets has the strategic advantage must act quickly, or loose it to the best tactician. By Turn 3 we are seeing the 1st casualties and by Turn 5 we have Close Combat going on. Usually is a bloodbath by Turn 7... and is not uncommon (in play-testing) wiping the entire Squad by Turn 10.

It was not that serious. But before the shooty squads barely got a clear shot before the orcs were upon them and the whole game descended into a vicious close combat slaughterhouse. So we tried to leave the table more open and the games developed completely different. Maybe the shooting is dominating at the moment and re have to crowd the tables again, we still have to try that.

This is how the tables looked for our first games:

Nice use of pink foam to make your table bigger.

Gorgeous table....

Death of a leader. IG vs IR. Firinglanes

Those firing lanes have to be over 20" long. Sure, there maybe some Cover... but you are being a WIMP! LOL

Seriously... read the Scenario and decide with you buddies... what matters is that you are having fun!

The problem was not the presence of firing lines but avoiding to be in a firing line by the Orks (not a problem for my orks though) Smile

@pink foam
Luckily I managed to cover it in brown sand by now. I just had to build a new gaming table for Deathsquads as my old one is still stuffed away in the wrong city^^
