Yeah, I'm on something of a question spree here. Wink

What skills do you guys normally pick first for your Imperial Guard?

For example: I have a SGT with a broken leg, but he DOES get to pick two skills. Do I compensate with moving skills? Or focus on shooting?

My CO has an old battle scar, same problem: try to avoid having to use S, or compensate for it?

Curious to hear your thoughts!

Make him your SNIPER!

You can get a bionic leg later.

What equipment do they have ? What "job" you got in mind for them ?

Knowing this will help a lot.

But i agree with Mordheimer let the one-legged-man be a sniper, in general, unless he is super uber already, dont try to compensate on handicaps, focus on what can make him great.

Mord's right - bionics will sort that out for you when you have some spare cash - skills are too valuable to waste. My old Captain Gimpy had all his issues sorted by some fortunate bionics and still got some cool skills along the way.

Try to get your other officers to fill in the gaps - if you want to have a balanced squad that is. A sergeant and a lieutenant focussed on CC should be enough to hold the line, maybe with some long term investment in an Ogryn (I love Ogryns in IG squads).

Your CO already has a bolter, right? Then, you have a ready made sniper team, between the two of them. The bolter is two useful a weapon to place in CC f you can help it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

Right now, the sergeant's got an autogun and a combat knife, really. Haha! I got some credits to spare, so I could totally equip him with something cooler. So a longlas or something?

His job? I was thinking close ranged fire (shotgun) and close combat. I guess that's off the table now. Wink

Or you could make him really terrifying and go for the plasma! (Risky - but potentially very cool). You need a skill to qualify for both weapons (sniper and steady shot is a good combination for a long las and plasma and coolant king is a good one for a plasma gun).

Go for the plasma!

That IS a pretty awesome idea. OMG! But it's kind overkill for this early in the campaign, isn't it? Pretty sure I won't be facing Chaos Marines.

But you are facing an Ogryn (big target) and you have either a sniper who is a threat across the board (steady shot is awesome) or creating having a high strength threat with the plasma (the threat is worth as much as the actual weapon - threaten him with plasma, kill him with autoguns).

The safe option is to buy a hellgun and spend the skills on steady shot and another shooting skill to develop the character.

I say go for the kill!

I think you should go with the plasma (personlay dont think the Long Las-gun looks that great) but Plasma is a REALLY big threat, wounding everythik on a 2+

If you want to make him a "normal" sniper, go for Hellgun, Bolter or just Lasgun w. Hot-pack looks like a better deal for me anyways.

Skills I think: Eagle Eyes, Steady Shot and Trick Shooter are all good sniper skills.
If he have access to speed skills: Spring and Scale Sheer Surface are great for getting in possition fast.
if stealth skills: Infiltration is also great.

OK, right now I've got:

CO / Bolter (shooty)
LT / Autogun, sword (undecided)
LT / Autogun, sword (undecided, can still pick a skill)
SGT / Autogun (S2, can pick a skill - so prolly shooting... let's say steady shot?)
SGT / Plasma rifle (so definitely shooty... haha)
TLGT / Flamer (shooty, but close range)

The rest of the squad is 2 I4 Recruits and 2 BS4 recruits (very nice). And of course a Hired Gun, where I'm leaning towards the Commissar (fluff reasons, got a awesome model from my prisoner exchange... and he does rock).

From the looks of this it appears my sergeants are leaning towards shooty (along with my CO), but that's a shame of their WS4. The Lieutenants are now first in line to become better at CC... but that's a shame of their BS4.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like a shooty squad to me!

The Lieutenants could be jack of all trades perhaps, dependent upon how you kit them out - maybe shoot first and then switch to close combat kit later in the game (close fire support for your recruits maybe). The plasma gunner is a no-brainer and the S2 sergeant needs good shooty skills (at S2 sounds like a sniper to me). Maybe look to make your LGT a close combat specialist, otherwise outgun your opponents and use the I4 recruit to hold off your opponents, with close support from the lieutenants and the BS4 recruits - the captain and sergeant can sit back and kill from distance (steady shot all round).

It might work or go horribly wrong - I am a terrible tactician, but seem to benefit towards the end of the game (so maybe I'm a good tactician after all!) and (so far) I roll well in the post game (early games wth Captain Gimpy aside).

Next development is whether to recruit heavy stubbers to increase the rate of fire even further, or add flamers to make getting close a nasty proposition for any opponent (heavy stubbers are cool - but several flamers is really vicious)?

Thanks Laney.

Stubbers became FAR better after the last update (S4!). Sturmm made a mess of many of my men by rolling lots of hits on his D3.

That said... flamers rock, especially when you got a lot of terrain. Contrary to what you might be thinking, I find my table is still on the open side: lots of open spaces between the buildings. So for now... I'm leaning towards stubbers.

But we'll cross that bridge when we reach it. To be completely honest, I think I want an Ogryn after this. Between the Ogryn and the Commissar there will be a fair amount of CC killiness, so the rest of the squad can be shooty.

Sound... sound?

An Ogryn and Heavy Stubbers - that sounds like a completely sound proposition.

Arachas - it sounds like you've got some ready made targets for that plasma gun!
