Nice work! I like that you use the plastic minis instead of using the metal ones.

It looks like you have a good start on your squad.

*critique* (please don't cry)
The biggest thing you will learn as you do more and more is the importance of thinning you paint. If you look at the imperial eagle on the chest you can see a perfect of example of how if your paint was thinner it would have caught all the detail on the eagle and not been so clumpy. That could be said for alot of spots.
i find that a 1:1 mix or a little less than 1:1 paint to water works best. Or if you at least dip the brush in water before you pick up your paint it help.

Even though the videos are about space marines the techniques that Les over at awesomepaintjob.com and his videos will teach you alot if you are willing to watch them.

https://www.youtube.com/user/awesomepaintjob?blend=6&ob=4#p/u

This one is particularly helpful for skin tones

You seem to be on par with me for painting, or rather, your models look like mine do when I put the effort into actually painting them. I find my biggest problem - what keeps me at "meh, they're playable" and stops me from being "hey, looks good!" - is that I get bored painting and just try to rush steps.

That said, they look good, any chance of a "zoomed out" shot to let us see everything at table top height?

Hi Edward,

Overall a good effort

Plus points...
Nice original colour scheme - I've not seen that combination before and it does look very 'Mordian' - so good eye for colour.
Clever use of selected Cadian parts to create Mordian looking models
Seeing them as a group from a distance would show the overall effect really well - this scale of picture shows up every mistake.
Good to see you going beyond two colours to add the white trim (again very Mordian) and spot colours like the red on the glasses.

Things to work on... (Bearing in mind they are WIP)
Dysturbed had it right when he suggested you should thin your paints - usually just dipping your brush in water is enough (also GW foundation colours give an even coat when painting over black - I have only ever used Citadel so can't comment on any others).
I reckon you used something close to a 'standard' GW paint brush (I might be wrong), which is fine, but you will gain more control over where the paint goes if you use a detail or fine detail brush (I tend to only use standard brushes when doing really big areas). It takes longer but the overall effect is better.
It also looks like you've used the black undercoat to create the first level of shading - which does work (the 1st officers face and plasma gunners face have been done well like this), but it needs to have thinner black lines. I'd suggest filling the whole area with your basecoat and then use a darker wash to create the shading as you develop greater brush control.
Simple basing - sand scatter and a few grass patches will really set the models off.

Disclaimer: These suggestion are purely based on how I paint and like any art (which at the top levels is what it is - just look at John Blanches work - it's pretty unique and many of hte Golden Demon painters have their own styles) everyone gets their own style so choose to ignore/take on these ideas.

Thanks for sharing - please show us more pics of how they turn out.

Cheers Laney cheers

edward... NICE MODELS MAN! I think that we all agree that you do have a nice talent for creating great conversions.

On the paint, is a good effort... you are on the road for success! To echo what others have said, thin the paint... I suffer the same issue. I resolved it by putting some paint in a little plastic tray (a drop or two) and then dipping the brush in water so I get 1 drop of water or less. I have tried just dipping the brush in water... but I tend to forget which is the paint-water and which one is my drink! Suspect

I will keep insisting (and I know its a WiP), but don't forget to base 'em! Nothing elaborate... some sand (dry brush it bestial brown and then bone white for a quick & dirty ground) with some static grass). It will take your model to a new level.

Thanks for sharing!!!

EDIT: JUST SAW THE VIDEOS... VERY NICE!!!

Agreed Agreed, a lot of good points here.

I will add however, that getting used to paint with a bigger brush then fine detail or detail will do wonders, just to give a second oppenion on the brush size issue, I myself spent most of my painting experiance using detail and fine detail for everything, and it wasen't until about a few years ago I started using bigger brushes, and I've never looked back

Keep in mind the smaller brushes are still used, though only for details.

And once you get a hang of it, it will not only look smoother, but will be faster aswell, and knowing what I know now, it would have been great if I had practiced this all along, so I thought I would let you know.

This goes hand in hand with another very importent point in the painting hobby, taking care of your brushes

You should make it a habbit to look at your brush often, if the paint is covering over half of the brush, wash it, and apply colour again, this way you keep the paint from getting to the root of the brush, and thrus destroying it, it is never to early to start doing this, your brushes will seem like new for a very long time and save you lots of money in the long run.

We have told you a lot, and it is proberly too much, to be mindful of all these things at the same time, so pick one thing either from the others or my post and do it, do it for a while till you're comfortable with it, then come back here and pick another thing.

Before you know it you'll be painting better then you thought possible!

Very nice; I love that in such a small squad the use of mostly bare heads, a few peaked caps, and blue slacks, can make a bunch of Cadians look like proper Mordians.

(GW is really missing out not selling "head sprues" for Mordians, Tallaran, etc.)

Head sprues of the different Imperial Guard regiments would be a great little project for forgeworld (and then they could charge the price of a full squad or two for and tiny upgrade set!) - but vostroyan - with a gun sprue or two, mordian, valhallan, tallarn, praetorian would all be top notch!).
