An introduction to my DS squad's background. Still very general, but I specify in future editions! Enjoy!
Airborne. Mobile. Rapid response.
These terms define the approach of fighting favoured by the Harakoni Warhawks. But among the regiments hailing from Harakoni there is one that has truly elevated these ways of war into an artform. It is not a regiment in the strictest sense of the word. It was not raised from a single planet, nor does it ever stay coherent: it is an ah hoc combination of light recon striking elements from many regiments, specializing in lightning strikes and stealth operations.
Nicknamed the ‘11th’ or ‘Mad Sparrows’’, because of the incoherent nature of the regiment, the 389th Harakoni Warhawks is employed where regular Harakoni assault tactics (if there is such a thing) are deemed too conspicious or particular ways of warfare are needed. Where regular Harakoni regiments make standard use of carapace armor and heavy airsupport, the 389th is lightly equipped for fast and silent movement. Capturing objectives under the cover of night or silent assassinations of enemy officials or high-ranking officers are among their prime uses.
Being part of the 389th is considering an honor among the Harakoni regiments, though not all favor the tactics employed. Many soldiers prefer the airborne assaults of the line-regiments to the stealthy incursions of the Sparrows. Those that particular aptitude for these tactics are nevertheless often reassigned to the 389th, where they are further drilled into its ways.
This means the 389th is a regiment comprising soldiers from many different regiments, from many different backgrounds and approaches to combat. As such regimental discipline is not overly strict and many of the units in the regiment are completely self-sustaining and independent in the field - which is in fact a requirement for many of the missions the units of the 389th are deployed to.
In practice the variety in unit backgrounds and their lone-wolf employment bring versatility to the regiment. The command staff faces the daunting task of allocating all these different units to the right battlefields, from 2-man assassination teams to recon platoons to entire battalions securing forward objectives.
