PostSubject: Rhuntars IG and Orks   Rhuntars IG and Orks I_icon_minitimeThu Feb 02, 2012 12:54 am

So, after obsessing about DS rules for over a year, I got a saturday gig two weeks ago that paid in cash, and I was able to take the plunge.

I bought a few boxes of IG and a set of Ork Boys and started actually assembling some models. They're still just being cleaned to get primed, but I'm hopefully close to being able to try and remember how to paint.

Anyways, a couple of (probably poor) photos snapped with my smartphone:

IG Guardsmen with autoguns/lasguns

Rhuntars IG and Orks E48fc7da

Two heavy weapon guardsmen

Rhuntars IG and Orks F89ed476

And an Ork Wierdboy, Boy and a couple grots in the background

Rhuntars IG and Orks 76984296

Anyways, I'm happy to be joining the party. I'm hoping to have an IG squad and Ork squad put together into playable condition sometime soon, so I can try and convince some hapless suckers close friends to give DS a try. Renegades will be up after that since i'll be hopefully feeling more and more adventuresome with my converting/painting as it goes along.

I'm still picking away at cleaning the models, but will hopefully be painting soon.

Looking good. Is that some greenstuff I see on a base? The grots box is always exciting. I like what you have done with your weirdboy.

I am up in Vancouver, so maybe one day we can have a Pacific NW DS meetup. I have a squad just itching to get some battles in!

Sir... your smart phone is VERY smart! Those are THE best pics taken from a phone I have ever seen. If I weren't a tech geek, I would DEMAND a pic of you taking a pic of models, followed by the pic you took. Hehehe... AMAZING PICS! Just to let you know, in my experience, taking good pics of models is part equipment, part setup & lighting, part exorcism (as DeafNala!), part skill and some luck. You have it all!

The bad news... I don't want to see crappy pics from you EVER! Hehehehe...

Your models are looking good. At first, I would NEVER do conversions. Like you, I was afraid (concern?) about the model. TAKE THE PLUNGE! It IS amazing! Start small... for example, drill the barrel of the Flamer and the Grenade Launcher. Do NOT worry if it is a little crooked. Don't need to be perfect.

Your Weirdboy gave me an idea... I have been thinking for YEARS what to do. Now I know. Also... Gretchins are born to be abused by Orks. YOU are the biggest Ork... if you don't believe me, put an Ork model on the floor and stand next to it. Now... ABUSE those Grots! Smack Think of crazy things and start using them as test-subjects for conversions. Add weapons or re-pose them. If you mess up... they are Grots! BTW... Gretchins are my favorite unit!

Last... consider joining The Prisoner Exchange 2012 Event (LINK)... it is lots of fun and it is about YOU pushing YOUR hobby skills (NOT about who convert or paint the best). You build & paint something for someone, and you get something from someone else!

Anyway... GREAT work on your models! We want MOAR!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement!!

@narcissus My wife works for a company thats based in Vancouver, so its totally on our list of places to vacation to. I'll let you know if i manage to make it up there.

@mordheimer

quick photo of my work space. I'm fortunate enough to have inherited a workbench in the basement of the house we just bought with an old school articulating desk lamp. Another worklight clamped to the edge of the worktable gave me the two lights at a 45. I also took a bunch of photos and quickly deleted all the fuzzy ones...

Rhuntars IG and Orks 570cb518

I have done some conversion work, and love it! My main issue/concern is that i don't have the horde of 40k bits that i do for fantasy. The second issue is needing to get inspired. I find that starting to assemble models gives me the drive to find out what makes them tick and give me ideas, and starting to paint them gives me ideas for basing them. So it has to be a continual cycle of building a few, painting a few, getting new ideas, and starting over.

i put a couple photos of my favorite conversion to this point, my beastman centigor in this thread: Centigor

Edit:

Oh yeah, that is green stuff on the base, but just filling in the old slot hole from the base. I fill in bases with the leftover anytime i mix up some of the green stuff for other projects. Saves me feelling like a throw it away, and gets the other models ready for priming without having to fiddle with tape, etc...

Better late than never as they say:)

Even without a giant box of 40k bits it's still pretty easy to make a Rhuntars IG and Orks 778760 squad. The different empire boxes has a lot potential not to mention the flaggelant box. Or you could go with some skaven like I did here. Just throw in the odd lasgun and you're good to go.

Looking forward to more pic's from that little creppy corner in the basement;)

Alright new photos. Spurred on by the encouragment to convert. I quickly got to chopping the legs off of some orks.

Potentially my Sneaky Boss, with a shoota, soon to be upgraded (once he figures out how to buy stuff from the IG depot)

I cut both legs off, right at the hip joint with a single hard knife stroke. Chopped off one of the feet above the boot cuff, for a little repositioning, and carved away at his neck, to allow for greenstuff fill in to make a new neck.

And a loota or hero with a big shoota. This model is pretty basically out of the ork boys kit, but when i got to looking at the pieces i couldn't not use the shells flying everywhere. I was attempting to cut his legs into a crouching, careful suppression fire position, but slipped when glueing them. His natural ork-y ness came out the Loota, running while firing looked so in character, I let it be.

HAHAH! Great poses! Love the Loota! Great action pose!

On pics... what are you using to take pics? The lighting is good, but the focus is not. Check out the Tutorial section for two GREAT Tutorials on taking pics. It will help.

So I bought a new set of files last week, as well as the burnas/lootas box set. Kitbashing Orks is a blast!!

A couple pics of the my sneaky boss. He'll get some eventual green stuff on some gaps, and probably a few bits and bobs (guns, grenades and a couple bags or pouches.) These are still just off my iphone. Hopefully the focus is a bit better, and I figured out how to change my upload settings to keep the file from being compressed. I promise when I actually get to painting i'll use an actual camera!

Anyways, Pics!:

I tried to capture a dodging to the side type move. Not sure if it comes across. I might have to pop him off the base and give him a little elevation, to make it even more 'mid-leap'... Anyways, I had fun chopping up his legs and feet!!

Alrighty. Got a bunch of stuff primed today in the 85 degree weather. Summer might be coming to Portland after all.

So hopefully more to come soon, but have a couple pics until then.
I'm also trying out my wife's camera to get the hang of it, so let me know if the quality's poor, etc. I'll work on improving my setup for photos eventually...

Teeny bit of resizing on photobucket and hitting their 'autofix' button which seemed to cool the picture off a little bit.

This guy's not 'completed' but close enough that I though I'd better toss up some pics to show y'all

Very nice. He is looking good. Very unique idea with the sniper sights and alignment of the head. I've never seen that on an ork.

I agree with Narcissus... when an Ork CLOSES his eyes before shooting, he can actually hit something. This is a FACT of Ork Kultur. Very well documented, going as back as the Rogue Trader when the initial appearance of the great Kaptin Badrukk was documented. It is well known that he always plucks out the eyes of his best Shoota Boyz in order to fill the ranks of long range support Boyz with either blind or one-eyes Ork Snipers.

Not technically photos of models, but it'll help!

I cranked out a little pop up backdrop this weekend while I in between projects in the shop. Little angeld base with a groove to recieve plywood. Painted the plywood with a white and grey scumble on one side and just white on the other. If I buy a card for my wifes camera, I should have no reason not to post lots more photos.

Working on some photos of recent squads and some Super Dungeon Explore figures. I can't decide if my computer's internet is failing me or photobucket is...

Anybody having photobucket issues lately? I'm going on three days of struggling...

Alternately, does anybody have an idea of how use google drive as an image link? Let me know if that link works, has the right sharing setup, etc.

Pic of a IG trooper in progress, i've since added gold over the yellow base, and a dark wash over the whole model. I think this'll be the color scheme for my squad though.

(used whatever host is built into the forum... didn't get photobucket working...)

Looks good. In photobucket, maybe try and find the link to turn off the new version. The new updated version wasn't working well for me so I switched to the old version as it is much easier to work with.
