Still haven't managed to get a game of Death Squads in, I think my opponent has forgotten about it. I'll have to chase up some other opponents I think. Anyway in the meantime here's another little project I've been working on. I'm not happy with the design on the shoulder guard, but as this is the paint test model, I'm inclined to leave it until I've painted up a few more squad members, then go back and do all their insignia at once. As it is, there are already a few points where the paint has gone on too thick because I've tried a few different things.

It's supposed to represent an Astartes of the XV legion, in mkII Crusader armour towards the beginning of the Great Crusade. Of all the pre-heresy legions, the Thousand Sons are probably the legion that deviates most strikingly from the norm in their aesthetic embelishments, so I wanted to strike the balance between keeping the design features of the Thousand Sons, while keeping something that was clearly recognisable as the mkII Crusader Pattern. The goal is that when I run the Great Crusade campaign that will use these models, there will be a tech tree that will allow different legions to upgrade to different marks of armour, patterns of weapon etc.

Amazing job - any WIP pics - I'd love to see how the whole thing went together. Really impresive conversion work.

The symbols work really well on this pic and the marble section on the left pad is great (I've tried marble effect before and it's bloody difficult to get right). Any chance of more close up pics too?

I did take a few WIP shots this time...

This is my master. As you can probably tell, I ended up using different
shoulder pads on my paint test model, but these pics should give a
pretty good idea of component parts and green-stuff work.

So, I made up a mould and cast it up. This is my first real attempt at
casting, so I'm still learning from mistakes. All the green bits on the
cast-up miniature are where I've used green stuff to fill in gaps left
by air bubbles trapped in the mould.

This painting progress shot is the only picture I took without the arms
attached. It's a poor shot to show off the chest detail, but gives an
idea of what it looks like.

This painting progress shot shows a whole different iteration of the
shoulder guard design. On reflection, I think I like this design more.

My marble is just Dheneb Stone and White (I used Vallejo Dead White, but any white should do) with Chestnut ink veins. I find the ink works great for marbling because it gives a good inconsistent, translucent line.

What kind of things did you want close-ups of?
